Call for Papers: October 2025 Special Issue – “Artificial Intelligence and the Digital Humanities”

Guest editors: Javier Cha (University of Hong Kong) and Miguel Escobar Varela (National University of Singapore)

This special issue aims to explore how recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) unlock new insights and/or automate routine data processing tasks in the humanities. We particularly seek contributions that demonstrate the potential of innovative AI applications, such as transformer-based large language models (LLMs), computer vision, text-to-image generators, multimodal AI, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). The submissions should illustrate how the integration of these technologies enhances scholarship in the digital humanities, including the discovery, classification, extraction, interpretation, and preservation of arts, humanities and cultural heritage data at scale.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

▪ automation of routine data processing tasks
▪ enhancements in transliteration, transcription, optical character recognition (OCR), and machine translation to improve text accuracy and accessibility
▪ OCR correction using LLMs to refine the digitization of texts and enhance their usability for further analysis
▪ text mining and semantic analysis using state-of-the-art AI technologies
▪ image processing and analysis of visual cultural artifacts
▪ audio processing and video analysis to explore and interpret recordings and footage
▪ AI-assisted research of low-resource and endangered languages
▪ how AI alters the course of existing scholarly discourses and debates in the digital humanities

We welcome original research articles, in-depth case studies, and methodological reflections from researchers across various humanities disciplines from around the world. The contributions should demonstrate how to effectively employ AI to push the boundaries of what is possible in the digital humanities.

Deadline for submissions: January 15th, 2025.
